A good environment which is our direction is very important. “Respect for tradition, and respect for contemporary” we advocated in the first period was a whole new understanding to the artistic condition at present, and the opinion which we feed backed was generally recognized. Which was a good bedding for the next “China•Songzhuang Sunshine International Art Annual Exhibition” we will organize. As an exhibition, it will compose of some academicals value and technicality more or less, and then the term of “Inkism” comes out. In fact, you’re not at liberty to say it because one is using too vast. But why I insist on referring, exactly, it is a re-recognition of all these phenomena to the development of Chinese contemporary art. The Chinese contemporary art had developed for three decades, but contemporary and traditional have been mutually excluded and disagreed. Of course, there’s the necessary for going through such a progress of negation. However, there’s no any meaning for fighting with each other anymore from today on. For Li Xiaoshan’s “dead end”, Wu Guanzhong’s “zero ink” and Li Xianting and Gao Minglu’s idea of negating the past tradition, all of these are a way of saying, and in order to how to re-understand tradition and contemporary and find out our own attitude in such a mutually exclusive society. As a Chinese artist, how to recognize the present situation is the goal of the annual exhibition.
“Chinese Painting” can’t represent the allegation, and it’s one-sided to an excessive degree and there’re too much limitations in defining “Chinese Painting” as traditional Chinese painting. But it’s the inexorable requirement in the development of one period. How to understand “Inkism” we claimed? Literally, ink is black, water is white, it’s a complementary relationship as Yin-Yang. From the material, water and ink are extracted from natural minerals, and it is different from western chemical painting materials, all of these represents traditional Chinese culture and thought.
It is definitely wrong if only referring to the word “ink”, so what we advance now is “Inkism”. It is clear to have its own idea and system for “Ism”, and there has a long history in its own meaning in the traditional culture for “Ink”, but it is not that no one has put forward the concept of ink for the past three decades, just having promoted it to a cultural height.
It has its own realistic meaning in the present for “Inkism” which is based on the contemporary and keeps unifying between tradition and contemporary. Chinese artists will show their independent postures when taking up to the international stage. It can’t solve the problem fundamentally just like treating our yellow race’s unique black hair whether imitating the western golden hair or completely negate shaving bald. Only forming your own unique right to speak, and making the international realize your special meaning of cultural values, its depth and charm will highlight.
Western culture is a strong culture and plays a major role in promoting the development of world civilization. But its theoretical system can’t keep up the social development because of the cultural crisis today. When Heng Teer and Niessel announced the philosophy death and art death step by step, they have not resolved the issue before them. God is dead, everyone has become to take the individual as the center, no ultimate concern anymore, and humanity had begun to alienate. The nature’s retaliation on human is still external such as environment pollution, destruction of the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect and the tsunami, while the production of cloning technology to create its human into who created it before a commodity, which is an inherent fatal blow on human being who would have been the creation of the world, finally found that the own ego and dignity of themselves were under threat. Whether they should reflect on what went wrong, in fact the problem is that they lack of a humanistic care from the start of the creation.
Then back to the “Inkism” we proposed, ink reflects the relationship between ‘do nothing’ and ‘done everything’ of human and nature, which demonstrates naturally human nature and human concern. It’s a traditional Taoist thought advocating return to nature. And it’s the best medicine because of its contemporary in western contemporary art. It takes an auxiliary role instead of a dominant. For the current status of our Chinese contemporary art, we advocate to jump out of the circle, lead the traditional ink painting to a new level, a new spirit of ink, whether traditional, contemporary or other art form, as long as it concern to such natural concept about humane care and respect, It belongs to "Inkism"(文:sjr/摄影:/责任编辑:baishitou)
