Testing changes of the material world by time

The relationship between visual art and time has always been both mutual discord and inseparable. In the middle of eighteenth century, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729.1.22 — 1781.2.15, famous German esthetician), did in-depth description of boundaries between painting (he refers primarily to sculpture) and poetry in his prestigious classic Laocoon. He thinks lines and color as the coordinate symbols in space could only appropriate for the performance of the whole or part of the thing coordinating in space as well; and the written language as the symbol of continue in time could only express whole or part of the continue thing in time. Lessing gives all or part of things in the space a name as "objects", and believes that the objects and their attributes could be seeing are the specific subject matter of painting (sculpture). In addition, he gives a concept that whole or in part continue things in time as "action" (or "plot"), which becomes the subject matter of poetry. However, space known for paintings, sculpture and other visual arts present time as well, but just “can be only used in an instant action, so we must choose the richest breeding instant action, which could be clearly understood the whole story.

The judge stander established by Lessing for the classical aesthetic and artistic has been stirred by the creation of French Courbet, Manet and Monet in a hundred years, and has been transcended and rewritten by Cubism in the early twentieth and the art schools and movements followed it. Time is no longer the inhibiting factor for artists who have always made efforts to overcome it. On the contrary, it extends and expands the limitations of the visual plastic arts original, so far as to the time itself has become an important element of visual art and media. In Pop Art, Action Performance Art, Conceptual Art, Installation Art and Video and Multimedia Art, time has been important element which documents and reflects the changes of substance.

Last six years, Li Guangming did integrated art experiment including concept, action, installation and comprehensive material. All these are based on time of observation, reflection and production. Mottled, incomplete Dunhuang murals painted on the walls originally, according to preservation of paper and silk painting analysis, the mural should be colorful and complete, but why the brown and incomplete images are so difficult to forget? The reason is just time factor, the sense of history and the trace of time changing in the physical world impact greatly for later generations. Li Guangming gets inspiration from time changing and amendment of the mural, hoping his own works can reflect time and changing. In other words, the Great Wall, the famous paintings and great man, not only because they have passed away or because they have been built and created in the past, then formed feeling of distance of time in the audience’s psychology beforehand, even because he used material mixed with Kraft paper, loess, acrylic and Chinese ink, these leaded a realize of time changing in psychology by the form of visual image or say texture patterns. Crisscross bars of paper and ink texture effect, as the ancient wall painting shows us today, it presents sense of years and imprinting of change, the change of history, political and symbols of culture and art which influenced Li Guangming and our generations during half of our lives. Discovering and producing a language method in visual form to reflect time changing of material world. It’s very important for Li Guangming on the creation of the three series of ‘dying wall’, ‘famous paintings’ and ‘great man’, because he found a visual way to recording time, save memory as the computer to save historical information. In this visual way, it can present the people, things and environment not only in the past but also today, for example the series of ‘Light-harvesting &Shadow catching’, is to record the changing of light and shadow of real world. Choose Xuan paper instead of Kraft, Choose loess and dust instead of acrylic, present the immediate image instead of the past. It means the natural things can also be collected and presented on paper by artists as same as history. Time can change images from past to future; can record the change of nature, even just a moment or invisible itself, just like light and shadow. Artist gets inspiration from this to find out a use of visual method.

In fact, everything is in motion and changing. Specially, artist collects, selects, processes, refines and strengthens of the changing to present the special visual effects. For 250 years before, Lessing who reflects static moment or action in paintings and sculptures, but today's artists, are looking for a way to present the continuing and changing which is more realistic and real for audience. The series of Ice Melting, See through the Fogs and bulldozer of Li Guangming, is art experiment on notion and installation for him. In these series, things he presents are not the things staying in the memory or books, but the whole of the current social reality, that is, the real world itself has become the subject object for him. In the Light-harvesting &Shadow catching’, we can understand his attitude of nature, in particular, he has engaged in Chinese Ink creation for many years. Recently, he has started to observe and thinking of real life in the real world. It can be imagine, what will happen when physical and social meet together? How to balance the contradiction between social development and environmental protection? Faced to this hot issue today, every artist has his own way of performing. Li Guangming’s method is more natural, just because his observation, thinking and creation are based on Time. When people find this disturbing social issue, artist’s works gave us a topic to think and discuss. Industrial emissions, dust, waste water and waste oil, which were produced by human society, have changed and eroded everything on our planet today, and have blurred or even destroyed the original image and appearance of our planet. And the noise, is even more serious violations for human, even though it without a trace. The installation work of ‘bulldozer’ includes the writing on the wall of hall Be quiet 1’20’’, it is particularly valuable. By such a creative idea of reflecting things change, visual arts will get wider possibilities. Li Guangming starts from the time factor from traditional Chinese view of nature, reviews history and focus on now. Testing changes of the material world we lived by time.
